Ava in The SF Chronicle

11 Apr 2013

I was recently interviewed for a story about childhood cancers, not the ones that are doing well, but the ones that haven’t seen improvements. The article was written by a recently bereaved mother (who I greatly enjoyed talking with), and it was published today.

Here’s Ava on the Front Page:

Mark has made a .pdf so you can read the whole thing more easily. There are 3 pages. The file will open in a new tab:

There is a link to the article online, but you need a subscription to read past the first little bit.

Thank you, everyone, who has used this opportunity to check in and say something sweet! We love the good wishes! I hope to have something new and nice to show you on her birthday, which is coming soon… May 7th – she would have been Ten! Which makes ten years of parenthood for us. Maybe we should go out to celebrate?
Anyways, stay tuned for more Ava goodness.

Playing Hooky

05 Nov 2012

I picked up Oscar early – at lunchtime. All the kids in his class chimed out, “Oscar, your mom is here!” and Oscar looked a little ruffled. He doesn’t like unexpected appearances that much, I don’t think. Stick to the playbook, thank you.
His classmates, just coming on to the playground for recess, wanted to know where he was going.
When Lucy heard all the kids asking where he was going, she fixed up her posture, and was about to shout, “The Beach!”
when I (gently) grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth with my hand. I answered, “I have an appointment”, and smiled blandly.

When we got to the car, I let Lucy tell Oscar our surprise destination.
It was all smiles from there on out.
Oh yeah, in the car, Oscar asked, “Mom? When is Winter?”

Addendum: (or whatever):
I was missing Booker like crazy. There were so many happy labs fetching booeys. Oscar noticed it too. Crissy was the place that we took Booker the most!
Then I started missing Ava.
Then I snapped out of it because Lucy was screaming that Oscar had ruined her sand-thing. Or vice versa – I’m not sure.
We sat down together on a towel and had icy cold apple juice, and pirates booty. The kids leaned their shoulders together, and I felt better.
I’m not sayin’ anything, but I’m just sayin’.

Thanks for all the hello’s and check-ins today!
I love to feel the love.

We’ve all been missing Ava for 8 years now!

May 7th

Our sweet Ava baby would be nine today. Lucy and I went out for peonies. (And a haircut.) They didn’t have the pink ones I wanted. They has some tiny dark pink ones, that weren’t open yet. So I went with the white. It’s fine, right?

I love the wrapping. It’s always my temptation to leave them in the paper.

Shall I photoshop them pink?

A PRETTY butterfly from Auntie Kristi ♥

Running with a lollipop?!

Cady sent me these pics – isn’t she sweet! And – that is exactly the right pink peony. I’ll make sure to call in my order ahead next year (10!)

Tonight we are going out to dinner down the street – Ragazza. I want to try out their back patio. After, we’ll tear into these:

Kiera and Cole came over for breakfast. SK surprised us with these classic lovelies! ♥!
