First Foothold in The Backyard

11 Mar 2012

We got a small, basic first effort in today.
I pulled some weeds, Mark mowed.
I weed whacked, and pruned some of the roses.
Salamanders abound.

This azalea was given to us by Inge and Gesa the day Ava was born! Chief saved it, brought it back to health, and now it’s here:

Here’s the plant when it was new (May 2003):

I have Much Much Much more to do in time for Easter.
On a positive note, the very beginnings of the Lilac blooms are just visible!

Fakey Smile

16 Jan 2012

Sigh. Do all kids have to learn the fakey smile? Why?

Remember this hat? Flashback!
it’s a hand-me-down from Ava.

While I’m on the subject: This hat is probably the last thing I have of Ava’s that fits Lucy.
We’ve really enjoyed the re-wearing of Ava’s clothes. Oscar has compared photos, and it’s been a great way to feel the connection to his other sister. Hopefully Lucy can see the pics when she’s older and feel it too.

PS. The beautiful red shirt on Lucy is from Kristi.. – Don’t you wish You had such an awesome personal shopper?

Flowers for Ava’s 8th Birthday

07 May 2011

My happy tradition (and means of coping through May 7th) is to head over to Bloomers for some Kick-ass Peonies.
We had them for Ava’s first birthday, and pretty much every year since!
(Last year’s was especially nice because Lucy was there, and our family finally felt complete.)
Here’s this year’s pick, paired with a sweet princess cake from Schubert’s.

This sweet package came in the post:

Nana and Chief brought these gorgeous blooms to Holy Cross:

(If you ever want to go, the grave is all the way back, all the way to the right, in a place marked “holy angels”.)

UPDATE:
Omi sent this photo in. It’s a peony she planted in Sebastopol. (See her writing in the comment section below.) These flowers don’t really thrive in SF, it’s too cold during the summers. But the heat in the country is ideal! And, what a pretty color!
