(Rainy) Weekend in Sebastopol

05 Jun 2011

(thanks anthropologie)

The rain did not stop us. It was so cozy with the fire going. Mark and I got to take a nap on the sofa! (At. the. same. time. :) ) We read books (started Treasure Island), played games (Oscar beat us all at Chinese checkers), and made spaetzle.

And, the cherries were ripe! This year the birds didn’t get them before we could. During breaks in the rain, we walked around, and breathed in all the fresh air. Oscar climbed a big fallen tree. We chased wild turkeys away from the vegetable patch. Booker didn’t even see them. The sun was out for a decent amount of time. We got these fun shots:

Thanks Omi for such a fun time! Opi, best steaks ever! xo

Ausstecherle (a.k.a. German Christmas Cookies)

11 Dec 2010

These are the cookies that Mark and his his sister Karen made when they were kids. The cookies may seem plain, but the tradition of making them is meaningful when it’s passed down to the next generation.

If you ask Mark, the best part about baking the cookies is being able to sneak eating the raw dough.
The mixing – as you will see, has its own little method, and the choosing of cookie cutters is always fun. The cookies come out sweet and buttery with a little crunch. One day I might just have to decorate some, but for now I’ll resist. Frohe Weihnachten!

PS. This is a scan of an old postcard that Omi found – I think it’s so charming! Click to see it big.
